Refinishing On Barn Siding
Test on a piece to see if you like the process and finish.
Refinishing on barn siding. A friend and i managed to find a beautiful barn door and so i took it home and it sat in my garage for quite some time. Also it seemed like. Before i could turn the barn door into a table top i needed to clean the wood up. Use a wide paintbrush to apply the stripper to a 2 to 3 foot wide area of the siding.
From there you can top coat if you wish. Apply chemical stripper to the siding. Repair the siding last as it is the least critical component protecting the building and for safety. We really really loved the gray weathered look of the barn wood.
You guys this stuff is amazing. These are my top 3 picks for wood siding. Then the idea was born to use this as the top of my craft room work table. Once the wood was dry from its cleaning i used a regular paint brush and sparingly applied the minwax finish.
Good luck with your project. Finishing sealing ok so here was the big dilemma. Rub the 220 grit sandpaper in circular motions around the wood s surface then brush away any residual sandpaper dust with a washcloth. Cedar is always a good choice for rot resistance and it is good for keeping pests at bay.
I used minwax polycrylic water based protective finish in clear satin. Problem is as soon as you start any significant sanding you loose the gray. Original siding contributes greatly to the historic character and appearance of agricultural buildings and is often a good indicator of their age say johnson and visser. The last step to clean and refinish your reclaimed wood is to properly seal the wood.
The shellac will seal in any of the old that remained and should seal off the oder. Then to get rid of bumps or imperfections press 220 grit sandpaper against the wood s surface. Wait for the barn wood to air dry for at least 1 2 hours before sanding it. Make sure not to use too much.
I hope this helps. Many old barns were re sided with southern yellow pine around the 1920 s 1940 s. If that is the way you want them to look i would blow them off with compressed air then shoot 2 or 3 coats of shellac on them. Allow to sit until the stain begins to lift and bubble.
