Retractable Awning Wind Rating
There are 4 wind rated classes of awnings.
Retractable awning wind rating. This retractable awning is resistant to rain color fading and wind. Retractable awnings are made from fabric which on its own would be blown away even in minor 3 to 4 on the beaufort scale wind conditions. When fully retracted closed some retractable awnings will survive 100 mph winds. The smaller the number the less wind it can handle and this awning is rated at a four.
This means that light to stiff breezes are not an issue. However if you choose a durable retractable awning for your home there is nothing to worry about. Unrated or class 0 either wasn t tested or failed to withstand a sustained wind of 12 mph. Many of the higher specification awnings come with their wind rating based on kilometres per hour or the beaufort scale.
In fact most self supported retractable awnings have been tested to meet the wind speed of only 30 40 kilometres an hour. If you live in an area with considerable wind then we highly recommend either a metal awning which can withstand wind of 80 mph. Class 1 is rated to 12 mph beaufort 3 class 2 beaufort 5 to 24 mph and class 3 beaufort 6 to 31 mph of sustained winds. When measuring wind resistance many manufacturers will refer to the beaufort scale.
Oftentimes that testing was completed without ongoing or irregular wind conditions.
