Shed Roof Leaking Through Nails
Morning all i re felted my pent roof shed yesterday.
Shed roof leaking through nails. Even on a normal shed roof i have seen water drive under a 4 inch nailed lap. How to repair metal shed roof if you have a metal shed roof then consider yourself lucky metal lasts forever and is far more unlikely to fly off in a storm unless you live in kansas. I think the rain is coming in through a couple of gaps somehow by the nails i used clout nails maybe if i put another lot of felt on roof but be more careful on the angle they go in dawn78. All went well until i went into the shed looked up and saw that the clout nails had come through the roof by a couple of mill.

As i said those waterproof mastics and adhesives help glue felt down but on a shed where the structure is moving and felt vibrating in the wind they are not suitable to use as waterproofing in my opinion. I didn t get any black residue on my hands at all i used felt nails a short one for the top of the roof and the longer ones for securing the overhangs. Roof nail leaks can happen when roof nails have been loosened slightly from high winds or have simply pulled out over time.
Sometimes the water shows up at a ceiling spot distant from the leak. Some roof leaks are tough to locate. I secured the side overhangs with timber which i screwed on i m praying that i ve done it properly and it won t leak as i ve been suffering with it leaking like a colander for about 3 years. Metal sheds are more prone than others given that finish panels are installed by puncturing the panels with nails and screws. And just one rusted out nail can cause your roof to leak every time it rains. When reinstalling the new shingle make sure you re insert the nails through the original holes to ensure the shingle above does not begin to leak. I aim for 6 8 and that s on a normal 30deg type roof.
If your ceiling has a plastic vapor barrier between the drywall and the attic insulation push the insulation aside and look for flow stains on the plastic often water runs to openings in the vapor barrier such as at ceiling light fixtures. But there are ways to fix leaks and keep your shed in working.
